Cross-Country Program

Canopy's XC Program module is available to soaring clubs. It tracks cross-country flights, badge progress, and proving ground completions.

Overview

The XC Program gives your soaring club a structured way to:

  • Track member cross-country flights and distances
  • Award SSA badge progress (A, B, C, Silver, Gold, Diamond)
  • Define and manage proving grounds
  • Encourage XC flying through visible progress tracking

Members can see their own progress from Cross Country → My Log in the portal. Admins manage the program from Admin → XC.

Enabling the XC Program

The XC Program is enabled by default for Soar organizations. If it doesn't appear in your sidebar, contact support@flycanopy.com.

Logging an XC flight

Members log XC flights from Cross Country → My Log → Add Flight. They enter:

  • Date and aircraft
  • Distance claimed
  • Route (departure and destination)
  • Any relevant documentation or notes

Admins can review and approve logged XC flights from Admin → XC → Flight Claims.

Badge tracking

Go to Cross Country → Badges to see badge progress for all members. Canopy tracks:

  • A Badge — solo flight requirements
  • B Badge — cross-country distance requirements
  • C Badge — duration and distance requirements
  • Silver, Gold, Diamond — SSA national badge requirements

Badge milestones are calculated automatically as XC flights are logged and approved.

Proving grounds

Proving grounds are defined cross-country tasks or routes that your club endorses. Go to Admin → XC → Proving Grounds to:

  • Create a proving ground (name, description, start/end points, distance)
  • Mark completions when a member flies it
  • See who has completed each proving ground

Members can view all proving grounds and their completion status from Cross Country → Proving Grounds.

Airport reference

Go to Cross Country → Airports to search US airports for route planning and distance verification. This is a read-only reference tool.

XC Resources

Go to Cross Country → Resources to see links and documents your club has published for XC pilots — airspace notes, landout lists, task suggestions, and safety briefings. Admins add resources from Admin → XC → Resources.
