Aircraft & Fleet
Manage your club or school's aircraft fleet — from adding tail numbers to tracking squawks and maintenance.
Adding an aircraft
Go to Admin → Aircraft → Add Aircraft. Required fields:
- Registration (tail number, e.g. N12345)
- Type (glider, airplane, helicopter, ultralight, etc.)
- Make and model (e.g. Cessna 172S, Schweizer 2-33)
- Year
Optional: photo, hobbs/tach meter reading, and notes.
Aircraft availability
Each aircraft can be set to:
- Available — shows on the scheduling board and is bookable
- Unavailable — hidden from bookings; used for maintenance or seasonal storage
- Squawked — flagged with a maintenance issue; shown with a warning on the schedule
Toggle availability from Admin → Aircraft → [Aircraft].
Squawks
A squawk is a maintenance issue or discrepancy that needs attention. To file a squawk:
- Go to Admin → Aircraft → [Aircraft] → Squawks
- Click Add Squawk
- Describe the issue and set a priority (Low, Medium, Grounded)
Grounded squawks remove the aircraft from the schedule automatically until the squawk is closed.
Members can also file squawks from the dispatch board after a flight. Admins review and close squawks from the aircraft page.
Maintenance log
Go to Admin → Aircraft → [Aircraft] → Maintenance to record maintenance entries:
- Date and description of work performed
- Parts used
- Who performed the work (mechanic, A&P, shop)
- Hours at time of service
This is an internal record — it is not a replacement for the official maintenance logbook, but provides a searchable history within Canopy.
Flight hours and hobbs
Canopy tracks flight hours per aircraft as flights are logged. Go to Admin → Aircraft → [Aircraft] to see:
- Total hours logged in Canopy
- Last flight date
- Current hobbs or tach reading (if recorded)
You can manually adjust the hobbs reading if it gets out of sync with the physical meter.
Aircraft in reports
Aircraft utilization data appears in Admin → Reports. You can see hours flown per aircraft per month, utilization rates, and revenue generated (if hourly billing is configured).
Removing an aircraft
To retire an aircraft without deleting its history: set it to Unavailable and add a note.
To permanently delete: go to Admin → Aircraft → [Aircraft] → Danger Zone → Delete. Flight records associated with this aircraft are preserved with the tail number noted.
